Background

Daniel’s first experience with EU funding was well over a decade ago. Whilst reading for a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree at the University of Malta, his interest in policy affairs led him to join a European affairs youth NGO. He served as its Projects Officer and eventually as its President, implementing the organisation’s Erasmus+ funded projects and gaining firsthand knowledge of the transformative impact that EU projects can have. This was a large part of his motivation to continue working in the sector in later years. 

After obtaining his Bachelor of Laws (Hons), he went on to achieve an MSc in Public Policy at Dublin City University, where his dissertation focused on a comprehensive policy analysis of child poverty policy in the UK. 

Before starting his journey at AcrossLimits, he worked at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, where he applied his legal background and aptitude for research in contributing to the development of several policy proposals and consultations. 

Role at AcrossLimits 

As the Head of the EU Funding and Proposal Development department, Daniel oversees the efforts of his team in preparing competitive bids for European grants and tenders. His understanding of a wide breadth of European policies and knack for number crunching come in handy when tackling technical bids and their budgets. He and his team also provide support to clients who are seeking to tap into European opportunities, and support the EU Projects department in developing educational content, research reports, and policy papers.   

He also enjoys working closely with the Partnerships department, and together they take on the challenge of bringing together various organisations from all over Europe into joint consortia to meet the varying needs of each call, a challenge that can feel like compiling a puzzle with constantly moving pieces. 

Daniel has a particular preference for projects related to sustainability, good governance, and social equity.

Life Outside of AcrossLimits 

When he is not going cross-eyed comparing tender specifications, Daniel enjoys spending time in the Irish countryside where he lives with his wife Rachel and their furry daughter Minnie, and roundly beating his friends and family in (very loud) games of Catan. He is a dedicated home cook who enjoys cooking up elaborate meals to feed his loved ones, who all promise they visit him in Ireland for his company more than the food (but the jury’s still out on that).
