PATTERN Project Makes Headway in the Last Stretch: Advancing Smarter, Greener Road Infrastructure

As the PATTERN project moves into the last stretch of its journey, the project continues to bring innovative solutions to the forefront of road infrastructure management in Europe. Supported by Horizon Europe, PATTERN builds upon pioneering research to deliver tools that enable cities to improve mobility, safety, and sustainability.

Malta Pilot: A Practical Test for Innovation

The project has successfully conducted a small-scale pilot in Malta, which deployed smart camera systems and AI-powered analytics to gather real time data on road usage, offering valuable insights to inform infrastructure planning. While pilots in Greece and Croatia are planned for later phases, the Malta trial shaped a practical methodology for engaging with end users and technology providers in collaborative innovation.

This approach serves as a flexible roadmap for technology implementation – recognising there is no single best way but encouraging the sharing of lessons learned. Inspired by the cooperation between Greenroads and Infrastructure Malta, this methodology guides future larger-scale pilots designed to support policymakers and urban planners with actionable data.

Driving Greener and Safer Cities

PATTERN’s mission centres on creating greener and safer infrastructure by turning complex research into usable innovations. The SaaS platform under development empowers city authorities to understand how roads are used, reduce pollution, and enhance mobility through faster, smarter decisions.

Perspectives from the Field

Claire Ciancio from Greenroads highlights the project’s practical impact:

“PATTERN represents the practical side of innovation — technology solving everyday challenges. Data and AI matter only when they help cities make streets safer and more efficient. As a parent, I want a future where movement is safe, air is clean, and decisions reflect community needs.”

Alessio Brutti of FBK shares:

“PATTERN is a key initiative to transform research and innovations into tangible products supporting sustainable mobility – a vital challenge for Europe. We aim to bridge the gap between research and market-ready solutions that benefit various research areas.”

Manos Papoutsakis of FORTH adds:

“PATTERN enables widening countries to move from excellent research to real-world impact through innovation and valorisation. It shows that innovation can directly support public authorities in making smarter, sustainable choices. I’m especially excited about creating actionable guidelines and blueprints that other countries can follow to commercialize research and strengthen their innovation ecosystems.”

What’s next?

The upcoming months will focus on refining the platform toward market readiness and expanding partnerships. Stay tuned for more information about our Final Event that will be held in the coming months.
